Nipple and areola reconstruction

Nipple and areola reconstruction helps complete the appearance of the breast, not only after mastectomy or reconstruction. Under local anesthesia, the nipple shape is created from your own tissue, and the areola is refined using either a skin graft or a local plastic technique. The goal is a natural-looking result with a gentle approach to scars.
Natural reconstruction
Quick outpatient procedure
Possibility to surgically refine symmetry
Gentle placement of incisions

Procedure Information

outpatient (standalone procedure)
local anesthesia
approximately 1 hour
removable (to be removed as recommended)
Natural shape from your own tissue
The nipple is shaped from delicate skin flaps to achieve the most natural appearance and to respect the characteristics of the tissue after previous surgeries.
Areola refinement for better harmony
The areola can be surgically adjusted using a skin graft or a plastic correction of the shape/edge, so that its size and contour match the other side.
Gentle approach and careful work with scars
Incisions are made with regard to existing scars and tissue blood supply. The goal is comfortable healing and an inconspicuous, long-lasting result.

    Before and After the Procedure

How does nipple and areola reconstruction work?

    Consultation and planning

During the initial consultation, we assess tissue quality, scar condition, and symmetry. We discuss the nipple shape and projection, as well as the method of areola reconstruction (e.g., skin graft). Expectations, postoperative care, and optimal timing in relation to prior reconstruction are also reviewed.

    Outpatient procedure under local anesthesia

After local anesthesia, the nipple is shaped from small skin flaps, and the areola is refined according to the plan. The incision is closed with fine sutures and covered, taking existing scars into account. The procedure takes approximately 1 hour, and after a short observation period, you can go home with clear postoperative instructions.

    Refinement of the result

After healing (usually 6–12 weeks), minor adjustments can be made to improve symmetry. During follow-up visits, we monitor healing, sensitivity, and shape stabilization, and together determine any further steps for ongoing care.

    Post-operative Course

    Days 1–3
Rest, dry dressing, protection from pressure
    Days 7–10
Check-up with the doctor, dressing change
    Days 10–14
    Suture removal depending on healing
    Weeks 4–6
Shape stabilization, avoid pressure and friction
    Weeks 6–12
    Minor adjustments possible (as agreed)

    Frequently Asked Questions

Usually after the reconstructed breast shape has stabilized and scars have healed. The timing is determined individually.
The shape is long-term stable, and the appearance of the tissues continues to refine slightly as healing progresses.
Scars are placed carefully within the tissues from the reconstruction to be small and naturally fade over time.
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and is generally well tolerated. Mild tension may be felt afterward.
Yes, sometimes symmetry of the other side or minor scar refinements are done simultaneously. This is always arranged according to an individual plan.

A standard consultation takes approximately 30–60 minutes. During the consultation, the doctor will assess your situation, explain possible treatment options, and answer all your questions.

Compression garments should be worn continuously for 6–8 weeks, including during sleep. They help reduce swelling, support the tissues, and promote scar healing. After consulting with your doctor, wearing time can be gradually reduced.
