Mastectomy

Mastectomy is a surgical procedure aimed at removing the breast gland, with the option of immediate or delayed reconstruction. The approach is chosen individually. It may involve removal of the gland including the areola, or a subcutaneous variant preserving the nipple-areola complex, followed by reconstruction using implants or reshaping.
Wide range of techniques
Possibility of one-stage breast shape restoration
Focus on natural proportions
Safe procedure with a natural result

Procedure Information

outpatient / with hospitalization (depending on the variant)
general anesthesia
approximately 1.5–4 hours (depending on extent and reconstruction)
mostly absorbable / removable
Tailored technique selection
The extent of removal and reconstruction is planned individually, taking into account anatomy, patient preferences, and medical indications — ranging from subcutaneous procedures to complete reconstruction.
Aesthetic reconstruction during the same procedure
In selected cases, reconstruction can be performed simultaneously (e.g., implants or nipple-areola complex shaping), shortening the journey to the final breast shape.
Focus on shape and discreet scarring
Incisions are made to keep scars as inconspicuous as possible, ensuring a balanced chest contour. Planning also includes symmetry and any necessary fine-tuning steps.

    Before and After the Procedure

    How does mastectomy work?

    Consultation and planning

The process begins with a detailed consultation to determine the goal, extent, and type of mastectomy, including reconstruction options. The doctor explains the expected breast shape, incision placement, length of hospitalization, and proposes a realistic timeline for healing and any additional steps to achieve size and symmetry.

    Surgical procedure

Under general anesthesia, the breast gland is removed according to the planned extent. Depending on the chosen variant, reconstruction is performed simultaneously, for example with implants or reshaping of the nipple–areola complex. Emphasis is placed on gentle tissue handling, bleeding control, and precise suturing for discreet scarring and a stable breast shape.

    Stabilization and recovery

After careful closure of the wounds, drains are placed if necessary, and compression garments are applied. Patients receive instructions on post-operative care, positioning, and follow-up checks. For implant-based procedures, registration and a schedule of follow-up visits are arranged to ensure long-term stability and satisfaction with the results.

    Post-operative Course

    Days 1–2
Rest, compression, care of drains as instructed
    Week 1
    Gradual calming, possible drain removal
    Week 2
Check-up, suture removal (depending on type), light activity
    Weeks 4–6
Wearing compression garments, gradual return to normal activities and sports
    2–3 months
    Shape stabilization, scar fading

    Frequently Asked Questions

A traditional mastectomy removes the gland along with the nipple–areola complex, whereas a subcutaneous mastectomy preserves the nipple and areola and removes the gland underneath. The choice depends on anatomy and medical indication.
Yes, in selected cases, one-stage reconstruction (e.g., implants) is possible. In other cases, a delayed approach is chosen to ensure safer healing. The decision is made by the doctor after evaluation.
Most commonly, implants are used, or a gradual reconstruction is planned. The method and timing are individualized.
Incisions are placed to be as discreet as possible. Scar care and appropriate compression help them fade gradually. The final shape aims for symmetry and balanced proportions.
Light activities are usually possible after 1–2 weeks, and full activity after 4–6 weeks, depending on healing. Compression garments should be worn as instructed by the doctor.
For options with implants, their cost is charged separately. An exact estimate is provided after consultation and selection of the procedure.

A standard consultation takes approximately 30–60 minutes. During the consultation, the doctor will assess your situation, explain possible treatment options, and answer all your questions.

Compression garments should be worn continuously for 6–8 weeks, including during sleep. They help reduce swelling, support the tissues, and promote scar healing. After consulting with your doctor, wearing time can be gradually reduced.
