Gynecomastia, also known as male breast reduction surgery, addresses enlarged breasts in men caused by accumulated subcutaneous fat and hormones produced by an overly developed mammary gland. During a preoperative consultation, you and the surgeon will determine the ideal procedure for you. Often, an ultrasound is necessary to distinguish between glandular tissue and excess fat. In gynecomastia surgery, the entire mammary gland needs to be removed, while liposuction removes the fat around the gland. If liposuction alone is agreed upon, the procedure can be performed under local anesthesia. However, if combining the procedure with gynecomastia surgery is deemed more suitable based on the condition of the mammary gland, skin, and fat volume, the surgery will be performed under general anesthesia, requiring a standard one-day hospitalization at the clinic. The resulting scars around the edge of the nipple become very inconspicuous once the wound heals.
